Dear All and, especially, Vintage Experts on the Forum!
I am just curious to learn more about a vintage IWC from my grandfather, so I hope someone will be able to give me an advice.
My grandfather bought this IWC on Aug. 8th, 1939 in Viena (Anton Haban Uhrmacher) for R.M. 380,- as the original bill proves.
Well, the plexiglas should be replaced (minor scratches) and the Fixoflex is probably more recent - please see photo below.
I am very keen to learn more about this vintage IWC!
Thanks a lot in advance for your hints and advice.
    Nicolas

The watch you have, and what a wonderful memory of your grandfather it is!!
It houses IWCs wonderful Caliber 83 movement.

It all looks great except for the hour hand which appears to have been replaced at some point. Give it a COR (Clean Oil Regulate) service, put it on a nice brown leather strap and it will be good for another 50 years.
    Very nice!

    Nicolas, a great family heirloom.

Please can you post photos of the original invoice and any other papers and or even the box?

I would definitely follow Marks advise here - that watch needs a good service and it will be fine. Alternately if you want it to be like new you can consider sending it back to Schaffhausen for a spa treatment. Not cheap, will take a considerable time but you will get a like new watch back.

    Thank you for your comments.
I am posting a photo of the jeweler's guarantee and a few more of the watch. The box is not special, even if it is probably of 1939.
Would it be worth to give it a service or even send it to IWC, if I consider to sell the watch? Or should I sell as it is?
Well, on the other hand I really should keep this unique heirloom!
    Best regards
    Nicolas

Many thanks for posting at my request. It's always great to see "original papers" belonging to true vintage pieces.

If you don't need to sell the watch - and if I was you, I'd definitely hold onto it's a true family heirloom.

In this case the emotional value is the most important.
The amount that it will bring if you sell it , I estimate, will be maximum 800-1000 Euro. Cal 83 is not much sought after unless you have the incredible Mk IX or the less expensive IWC W.W.W. Over 66.000 calibre 83 watches were built The complete service at IWC in Schaffhausen will cost about the same price. The condition of the movement seems very good. If it was my grand father's watch, I would keep it and give it an oil and clean service, carried out by a local watch maker. It would be the best compromise to cherish this piece.
    Kind regards,
    Adrian,
    (alwaysiwc).
