Today my wife, kids and I headed to Gstaad and the surrounding area. The main draw was a very small festival to recognize "the most beautiful cow in the alps." I'm not making that up. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of cows here and there are numerous festivals celebrating them. Among the best are the Des Alpes festivals in the Fall in recognition of the cows' return from the high summer pastures. The cows are adorned and wearing larger than usual ceremonial bells. Since we only learned of the beautiful cow event, we didn't know what to expect but it sounded like it would be worth seeing.

So this morning we hopped on one of the scenic train lines that combine transportation with incredible views.

The train passes through a number of very quaint towns. This one, Les Avants, is quite close to Montreux.
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20120826_5063.jpg

After arriving at our destination, we began the hike up to the Alpage -- a mountain pasture and farm house -- where the celebration was taking place. While not in the high mountains, the area is quite beautiful.

Despite spending the first 47 years of my life in Wilmington, Delaware; St. Louis, Missouri; and Columbus, Ohio; flat places all, mountains are the terrain I now love best.

I often wonder if Swiss cows understand how good they have it. Not only do they enjoy fantastic scenery, they are typically treated quite well. I used to refer to flying coach as going "cattle class" but can no longer do that since no Swiss farmer would allow one of his cows to go through that hell. :)
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20120826_5117.jpg

We passed over the summit of this small mountain (1832m) and then down a bit on the other side to get to the party. Almost there.
    i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh590/hdmathias/HDM_20120826_5123.jpg

We're a bit skeptical about this being the most beautiful cow in the alps. Not because of any deficiency in the cow but because the size of the celebration implies that the competition may not have been very far-reaching. There was much food and drink and then the guest of honor arrived. She was serenaded by folk music which was wonderful to hear. Then a bit of wine to toast the winner. It was a completely charming event that I'm very glad we decided to see.

This is the view from our table at the festival, enhanced, of course, by a certain timepiece.

    And finally, almost back home.

Thanks for coming along. I hope everyone enjoys it.

Yes, cow beauty contests are a way of life in CH, just as is fine watchmaking. These pictures were taken a couple of years ago at a judging contest in the Appenzell Region. I wore may Ingenieur that day, but I am the photographer so no wrist shot to share.

These shots were in October. The farmers at this time bring the cattle down from the higher moutains before winter sets in. As they parade the cattle through the village, they have the contest to select the beauty queen.

My wife with one of the local farmers dressed it their best celebration costume.

David, great post, you and your family are very luckily to be enjoying a new culture and such a beautiful place.
Thanks for taking us along. Believe it or not, I pass a large number of cows everyday on the way to work,I'll be looking at them differently from now on.

Fantastic photos! I wonder, however, why someone should think that a "most beautiful cow" contest could be made up ;-))

Thank you very much for the wonderful pictures David. The scenery is absolutely stunning and I think the Aquatimer looks great even so high above sea-level!

    Kind regards,

    What beautiful scenery! Great pictures!

And the things one learns at iwc.com! Although I live near Columbus, Ohio which many people refer to as a "cow town", it took Google to help me learn that yes, indeed, some cows do in fact have horns.

Thanks all. It was a really wonderful day.

Bill - No worries about piggybacking your photos, I love a good Des Alpes festival. I'll have to keep Appenzell in mind for this Fall.

Kevin - That we are lucky to get to spend a few years here is a thought that never gets too far from my mind. It's a privilege.

Clemens - Maybe someday I'll post a photo of the AT being used for its intended purpose...

Dick - Cows with horns were a revelation for me too. Doesn't quite fit with my 3rd grade understanding of the animal world.

    David,

Two items you should not leave home without...your camera and the VC-AT.

Outstanding photo's of such a beautiful country with a great written narrative as our guide. Thanks for taking us along on your mini travelogue. Can't wait to see hopefully many more of your family adventures.

Showed my wife. Wants to know how soon can we leave for Switzerland. She claims the cows are calling her name. I told her that I'm expecting my ordered VC-AT any time now, so we need to stick around until delivery. She wants to know why it's been taking so so long...wish I had an answer. IWC...please help with a (VC-AT) status update for the U.S. market.

    Thanks again David..excellent post!

    Thanks IWC for any assistance.

Thanks David for such great pictures, I am glad you have been there!

Indeed we are now all waiting for you to post some AT shots in its main environment (Lac de Lausanne can't be far from your location, and the °C are just great now to bath!)

Just to correct you, hope you don't mind: des alpes is not the correct way to spell the event - "la désalpe" is the term you may want to use...

    all the best

As in all beauty contests, the cows want peace in the world and to make everyone happy. I'll have a latte and a nice thick sirloin rare steak. This weekend we have our own local country show complete with livestock of all sorts ranging from massive rabbits llamas cows chickens and right up to shire horses plus all manner of country crafts and flower and vegetable contests.

Seriously though great photos, the view from mountainous regions can be so crystal clear or shrouded in mist. You have made me very envious of your trip.
