During the eighties, IWC was represented in Belgium by an importer who was crazy about IWC and about cycling, so he could combine both of his passions and sponsored a cycling team. Here is a picture of Patrick Sercu in 1981 , riding for the IWC/IMEX team.
I like the writing on the back of the card ; IWC watches, designed and created to be the BEST OF THE WORLD.
I think they still do ;)

    Hi Tonny,
This post must be appealing to George Kern and Andrew Thomas.
And of course for you when "The Flanders Tour" is passing your home next Sunday.
    Adrian,
    (alwaysiwc).

I remember Patrick Sercu very well from a lot of races in Denmark. He won the six-day-track race in Copenhagen with Danish Ole Ritter in 1977. He also raced at the track in my home town, Aarhus, against people like Niels Fredborg, Peder Pedersen, Daniel Morelon, Pierre Trintin and many others. I didn't know about the IWC connection. Great info, Tonny!

I'm a fan of cycling, used to be the official physician of the Hungarian Olympic Cyclist Team for almost a decade, so I'm fond of such connections between these two parts of my life. But I can deeply understand that IWC does not seem like adding its name for a cycling sponsorship nowadays as the ice here is extremely thin - let's think of nothing else but the story behind Jan Ullrich and the special edition of the GST double chronograph, how such a connection can turn adverse after an eruption of a doping case. IWC was innocent of course but the shadow is inevitable in such cases. Or think of the case between Tudor and Tiger Woods. A tad similarity here. But you cannot go wrong with Cousteau, Laureus and alike. Just my two cents here.

I like the colours of his "tenue". Coincidence?

Thanks Tonny for this history lesson. I tried mountain biking with my Ingenieur 3227 but my wrist couldn't cope :-)

    Kind regards,

    Clemens
