I was delighted to be one of the invited forum attendees at SIHH 2010. I apologise for not taking any pictures – you will see many photos from the very competent photographers who were there – and I hope that a “word picture” may convey some sense of the occasion.

Firstly I must thank Michael for arranging the invite and IWC for graciously hosting us and allowing us a look at the new models for this year. Thanks also to Mr. Klaus, Mr. Pantli and the other IWC staff who joined us for dinner over the two nights, and to the IWC staff who presented the new models to us at SIHH.

SIHH is huge. There may be “only” 20 exhibitors but the PalExpo exhibition site is enormous and each Maison had a large booth. I may be somewhat biased but from what I saw, IWC certainly had the most eye-catching interior to their booth, the design clearly reflecting the theme for this year: updating the Portuguese line. Visitors to SIHH are well catered for with transport laid on from the hotels and complimentary food and drink.

You have seen photos of the outside and inside of the booth. Outside were display cases showing some examples from each of IWC’s six lines. Most surprising here for me was the Aquatimer 2000 with a white dial and black/orange bezel (similar to the “missing” AT). I did not know this is to be a limited edition-thanks David (diaphane). The inside of the booth was themed as a yacht, with “decking”, cleats and “sails”. Along one wall was a display case with some of the new Portuguese models alongside a Jubilee and original Portuguese. What a way to whet the appetite for the “touch and feel” later!

In due course we were invited into the Press Room and given the Press presentation of the updated Portuguese line. The presentation was slick and professional, the video graphics well done (some “borrowed” from the Jean Reno film).

Following this was the “touch and feel” session, with several IWC staff on hand to answer questions. Mr. Georges Kern then joined us for a Q&A session, during which he was frank, open, funny and yes, wearing pink socks. The discussion was “off the record”, so suffice it to say that I was impressed with his attitude, his frankness and his appreciation of what the Collectors and forum add to the Company. Not everyone may be happy with the direction that some product lines are taking, but Mr. Kern has a very definite idea of what direction he wants to go and IWC has an excellent helmsman.

More “touch and feel” followed, and then champagne and an opportunity to mingle with Collectors and IWC staff, to discuss what we had just seen and heard. An a la carte lunch was provide courtesy of SIHH and the afternoon was at our leisure, to chat, to wander around, and dare I say it, to visit other booths.

A “word picture” from SIHH 2010...continued...

And so to the watches. I have no doubt at all that the “winner” is the white gold PPC with the blue dial. It is every bit as stunning as you might imagine and have seen from the photos. The midnight blue dial has a lovely matt appearance so it does not distract from the subdials. I personally like the dual moonphase display, the watch did not wear too large on my 17cm wrist. Anyone thinking about this model will not be disappointed.

Two moments really stand out when I reflect back: strapping on a Grande Complication (almost certainly for the only time in my life) and seeing four (or was it five?) tourbillons together at the same time. How often does that happen? The GC is amazing and aesthetically much improved on the original GC, IMHO. The various tourbillon models are all worth a look and I especially liked the Retrograde with ardoise dial. Personally I would prefer the date quadrant to be a little smaller, so that there is more symmetry between it and the power reserve display, but this is being “picky” and if I could afford one…

The Portuguese Pure Classic also made an appearance, with both examples present. I predict that these will be sold out very soon, they are delightful, thin, not too large in diameter, and despite my worries when I first saw pictures, the dial is well balanced. Both dials have gold applied numerals. I don’t think anyone ordering this “blind” will have any regrets.

The Yacht Club (“Sportuguese”) is much better than pictures convey. For some it will be a “love it or hate it” model, but it has a fine movement and expands the Portuguese line in an interesting direction. The black dial is very legible and the red chrono seconds hand adds some drama.

MF brought along the Collectors Forum da Vinci (CFDV). Whilst I have not ordered one, I think it is a handsome watch and the dial is rich in detail. The bracelet has a solid feel and the micro-adjustable clasp is easy to use. We can debate the wisdom of choice for this as a Collectors Forum watch, but anyone who has ordered one will have a fine (and very rare) timepiece.

Speaking of da Vinci, the ceramic/titanium model has a great 3D dial. It is large but light. Several of us thought that there is too much titanium in the case.

Several watches had a new deployment clasp, it has the Probus medallion incorporated into a re-shaped clasp. Very classy.

Finally, such an event would be nothing without the company of the other Collectors. We may be a disparate group of people, but brought together by a love of IWC watches, old and new, makes for great conversation and advances the learning curve. It was great to meet new people, and say hello to familiar faces, but I would like particularly to thank Tony (clepsydra) for bringing his original Portuguese. Everyone brought one or more fantastic IWCs but I doubt any would disagree that this 1951 Port was a highlight.

    Regards,

    Ross

Very interesting read. I wonder if any information from the discussion with Georges Kern can be shared here?

    Kind regards,

    Great report! Several of you

attendees have mentioned the open discussion with Herr Kern. Was there any question or discussion regarding the CF DaVinci and possible future CF watches, or was any such discussion "off the record" and no comment can be shared?
