    Hi everyone!

Excited to join your ranks as someone who loves IWC watches! I haven't been able to purchase my first watch yet, but am actively searching. I'm a complete newbie to the vintage watch world so I'm afraid to make a mistake buying something less genuinue.

I found these watches at an action house recently, and was wondering if you think they look geunine? No info on calibers.

Is this a caliber 89? I've found the watch face on some 89s, but none with these straight lugs.

And what about this one? The luminous markings at the batons are positioned further out the the other markings, which I also haven't seen before.

If anyone would be willing to help me with some knowledge I would be very grateful!

    Kindly,

Hello and welcome to the forum.
They both look OK to me ( except for the bracelet ).
Most probably the first is indeed a cal 89. To be sure to know if the case and the caliber belong together, you should ask for the case and cal numbers.

Thank you for the quick reply! I will ask for reference numbers on the 89. Any idea what the next watch is? Ref 810?

    803...a deliciously lugged rascal

What do you think a fair price would be for the 803? it's at about 1200 dollars right now.

    Thank you Oneredtrim!

Do you think this watch might have been altered? I can't seem to find any pictures online of an 803 with this combination of lugs, dial and that little indentation by the screw.

It does'nt look to have been altered, from memory this specific auto is somewhat unique in arriving with those lovely teardrop style of lugs, perhaps you can throw-up a side-profile pic..don't worry yourself about the little indentation..the model should if original have a semi-concealed crown (what a darling).

Thank you so much for your help! What about the minute markings by the batons being further out than the others? I can't find that in any other pictures of this watch.

This is the only other pic there is, no sideprofile unfortunately.

The dial is fine and period correct for the model type

    Cool!

Any idea if 1200 dollars is a good price for this watch? Seller says it's in working order.

The 89 apparently doesn't run. Are they relatively cheap to repair?

Which one would you buy if you were bying your first vintage watch?

The lug ends were altered in design somewhere along the life of the 803 (probably to coincide with the intro of the c.854)..the more pointed lug ends marrying perfectly to the happenings of the mid sixties and the earlier half-round (teardrop) mirroring more the late fifties (c.853)

I think prices are for you to decide Pob ..personally i'd hop on the 803, it was the first watch i ever bought (on my own)..fitted with a low slung crystal it's got a hint of disco volante about it (out of the three dial styles available to the model i prefer the type you've depicted)

I agree with Oneredtrim. The automatic is a gem.
Although Cal 89 is very nice, it’s not as special as the auto.

    Hi,

Did you close on the 803?

Curious since I'm Swedish and it was listed on a Swedish auction site...

In such case, wear in in good health. The 8541 movement is wonderful, I have a bunch of references with this caliber.

Thanks! Yeah, I like the sixties style straight lugs too. Had to look up disco volante, I liked that one too!

    Hej!

No I didn't have guts this time, 10k swedish kronor is a lot of money for me :) It never got sold though because it didn't reach the reserve price, so maybe it will pop up again!

I like many of the 8541 refs too - I feel like they are perfect examples of mid century understated but wellbuilt automatics, and they seem to look great on a darker strap.

Just out of curiosity, is servicing these watches very expensive in Sweden?

Found another cool IWC! Anybody know what this reference is?
    14k gold, 30mm case, 40-50s apparently.

    Hej!

For regular service I would say that the 8541 will be at the same cost level as any automatic movement from other high quality brands.

The problem is if spare parts are required. IWC like the other premium brands do not provide spares to 3:rd parties anymore.

Send me an email if you like, I've got a good local watchmaker that I sometimes use.
