    Hi All,

Apologies if this question has already been answered. After a long search and some quiet contemplation I've finally put a deposit down on a 5002-01 (!!). The seller says it's from 2006 (according to the warranty card), it has the original fish crown. But what movement does it have?

I've checked Thang's (very informative) Big Pilot resource and it says 2006 models came with the 51111. Does this imply it's the 'transitional' model, or would the crown have to be Probius Scafusia for that to be the case?

    All best,
    Doug

Hello Doug, two possibilities for a fish crown, or it is a transitional model, or an 5002 with the older caliber that was sold in 2006, the warranty card gives the date of the sale, not the production date.

Hi Tonny, thanks for the response, super helpful as always :-)

Out of interest, would the serial number offer a clue as to the production date? I could forward this on once I see the watch in the metal on Sunday.

    All best,
    Doug

Hi Doug, glad you found the website informative. One of these days I'll get around to adding more goodies. One of them will be a variation of this tool which helps date your watch from the serial number: moeb.on-rev.com/dyIWC/dyIWC.irev

Give it a try and it will let you know a production date. A probus crown is certainly a clue as to whether it's a transitional, but not as much as a time-lapse photo of the second hand (look up other articles which discuss this and show the pictures showing the difference).

    Best wishes,
    Thang

    Hi Thang,

Great to hear from you. I tried the tool to date the watch and it says it's likely to be manufactured in 2005, which makes sense as the warranty card is stamped February 2006, which I guess is when it was sold. With all that info, and the fish crown I think it's almost certainly not a transitional model. This doesn't bother me at all because I still think it's a fantastic watch and such a classic piece, whichever iteration. A very satisfied new owner...

This is a 1 second time lapse of my slow beat 5002. You can clearly see the 5 beats per second.

My 5002 has a Probes Crown that replaced the fish crown on a service visit to SH. I was allowed to keep the original crown, however.

    Hi Bill,

That's some seriously impressive photography. I've just videoed the watch using the slow motion camera on the iPhone and can clearly count the 5 beats per second, very satisfying!

    All best,
    Doug

Doug, a beautiful specimen you've got there. Whether it's transitional or not - that's purely subjective as there are equal camps that prefer one over the other. Personally, if I had to choose I like yours - the true original in its original form.

Wear it long good health... congrats!

    Regards,
    Thang
