It was already some time ago I added a pocketwatch to the collection. But when
I saw this one, no hesitation to buy it.

It is a cal 52 from 1916, not a regular one but a Qual. Extra, what stands for
Quality Extra. These were built with smaller tolerances in the different parts
of the movement, so giving it a higher quality, better to regulate and so even
    more accurate timekeeping.

I also love the script on the dial, haven't seen this type often and it also
came with an extra : the watch was boxed in a leather covered metal stand so
it could be used as a table clock.

Needless to say I am quite happy with this package.

Marvelous pickup Tonny. 8541 will be quite jealous, I suspect.

    Dear Tonny,

this kind of signature on the dial in a bow is quite often seen with Qual
Extra (so in the very end rarely seen as the Qual Extras are a rarity) and
probably was meant to resemble the signature of Lange & Sohne. So obviously IWC
wanted to make their Qual. Extras look like a Lange watch.

With regard to the dial I'm pretty sure your watch was sold in the mid
twenties. I have a very similar, which was tested at the Neuchatel Observatory
in 1928. But to check, whether or not it has been submitted for an official
rating needs the movement No. ....

    Regards

    Hi Tonny

your watch is part of a badge of Qual. Extras submitted in the period from
1922 through 1924 to the Neuchatel Observatory for an Observatory Rating.

It was rated as Chronometre de Poche II. Classe in 1922 and ended up as No. 22
    of all
watches in that class. The movement with movement No. 637.018, so one digit
lower, performed even better and finished at the No. 1.

    Enjoy your watch!
