    Hi All,

New here but i've had my IWC for some time however i dont know that much about
it. Read a recent post from Ralph and that watch looks very similar to mine,
    is it a 8541 cal?

It's in need of a new strap, i want one thats not too expensive but will suit
the age & style of the watch, any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Paul

    Hi Capirex650,

wellcome to the forum and congratulation for your nice dress watch. To me it
seems a ref. 817A with an 8541 automatic mov.

Any crocodile dark brown strap shall be perfect for this watch; try to find a
    gold IWC buckle style '80

Thanks for your reply :) I've still got the original buckle so will be able to
change that over. Does anyone know of the accuracy of this model? I need to
know if it's timekeeping is within specification and if not i can look to have
    it serviced.

I'm not certain what guideline IWC used at the time, but a general guideline
for a freshly serviced and adjusted watch is to keep time within -4/+6 seconds
per day. If your watch hasn't been serviced for a long time (7 years or more),
it is suggested to have it serviced.

As for straps, I like lizard for vintage watches. Whenever I picked up vintage
watches that had been neglected over the years, they frequently had a worn out
lizard strap on them. When I replaced the strap with a new padded lizard
strap, they really looked nice! Alligator/crocodile straps are nice too, and
really dress up a vintage piece like yours.

Good luck with returning the watch to its intended function (wearing it)!

Cal. 8541 is, just as cal. 8531 and 8521 one of the best movements ever made
by Swiss watch industry. It has the famous Pellaton automatic winding system.
Your watch is easy to open with the right tool. In terms of accuracy. As it is
a mechanical watch you should not be bothered for plus or minus 5 seconds per
day. If it is more than that, you might consider a service. But above all : it
it was mine, I would be curious to know what movement is inside and how its
    condition is.

    Regards,

    Adrian.

Thanks for the replies, really helpfull :) I think mine is running at a minute
fast per day so likely to need a service.. I had it done about five years ago
but at a Jewler that was recommended to me - at the time i knew nothing about
servicing watces and assumed they werer simple oil changes - not quite that
    easy now i know!

    Two places near me are;

    www.thewatchservicecentre.co.uk/

    or

    www.watchesoflancashire.com/

    opinions?

Looking at straps, i've seen these two that are nice options:

    www.watchobsession.co.uk/products/hirsch-baron-nile-crocodile- leather-watch-strap-brown

    or

    www.watchobsession.co.uk/products/hirsch-regent-genuine-alligator- leather-watch-strap-brown

I'd be interested to see what your opinions are on this

    Thanks

    Paul

20mm lugs set across a 36mm case makes a bonny lot.
