    Hello

Im at the point of buying a vintage 309 / Cal 89 from a dealer, and although
    the
watch looks lovely, the crown doesn't have the fish symbol on it. It's
probably late 50s / early 60s, but I don't have an image with the back removed

I would like like to know if there was some variability in the presence of
this logo on the crown, or do they nearly always have them

    Many thanks

    David

I may be wrong and I may be corrected by experts, but I don't beleive the c 89
is water resistant / waterproof and will not have a fish crown. The c 89 was
in production from ~ 1960 to 1969 or so. There are many variations.

    Thanks Bill

i certainly wouldn't expect it to be waterproof, just from the type of watch
    it is!

There certainly appears ones for sale with fish crowns, but whether these are
    original, I have no idea.

Bill is correct - with a small correction:

IWC Cal 89 was produced from 1946 to 1976.

There are many variations. Some had Fish
Crowns, others not, depending if it had a sealed case.

Pilot Watch MarkXI is probably the best known Cal 89 with a Fish Crown. It
    also had other modifications

ie Hacking Seconds and "Incabloc" Shock Protection.

I stand correctd,, as I expected. I knew the dates, but have a brain fault. I
was less sure if some of the variations had a fish crown at some point.
