This cal 89 in a Yacht Club from 1975 is different from the other cal 89 I've seen. Can you spot the difference? and explain its purpose?

Is this a shock absorber on the escape wheel?

The escape wheel shock system is a Lubrifix 66.

I do not know if it was used on all Cal 89 Yacht Clubs, and here is another example

Some further links with Lubrifix 66 shock systems, Frederic Piguet 21 and a ESA 9200

    Cheers from the cellar

Thanks Greg. We can always count on you to have the answer to these arcane issues.
Do you have an inkling on the advantage of using IncaBlock for the balance wheel and Lubrifix 66 for the escape wheel?

    Hi Tony,

    There are different systems for the balance wheel and escape wheel as well as many different manufacturers. See the following, you will have to cut and paste the URL;

    www.info-uhren.de/pdf/stosssicherung/stosssicherungen_flume.pdf

The Lubrifix image I posted previously came from the full version of the above publication (the above only has the first ten pages)

Why use the Lubrifix shock system on the Cal 89 Yacht Club?

At a guess IWC had promoted the Yacht Club with it shock absorbing system

    www.gregsteer.net/IWC/Cal_85/IWC_Yacht_Club.jpg

and provided extra protection just in case.

    Cheers from the cellar

Thanks Greg. I knew the Yacht Club has a higher resistance to shock, although the Yacht Club with automatic movements cal 8541 and cal 854 do not have shock protection on the escape wheel.
I guess my question was not clear.
My question was - is there any advantage in using IncaBlock for the balance wheel, and Lubrifix 66 for the escape wheel? Why not the other way around? or why not use only one of the anti-shock systems for both the balance and escape wheels?
There has to be a performance benefit, otherwise using two different anti-shock systems would just increased production costs, especially since I have not seen the Lubrifix 66 in any other IWC movement.

    Hi Tony,

I suppose IWC had used Incabloc for the balance wheel and saw very little reason the change it. The Flume catalogue referred to above only shows the Incabloc system available for the balance wheel.

The Lubrifix may have been an "off-the-shelf" solution for IWC, they clearly saw the need for applying it to the Cal 89 despite the absence on the 85xx movements.

    Cheers from the cellar

    Thanks Greg,
I wonder if all cal 89 in the Yacht Club had the escape wheel shock protected.

    Hi Tony,

Don't know the answer to your previous question but I did wonder whether the change/addition would merit a calibre variation but the dealer sheet indicates no change.

It is interesting that the Yacht Club with cal 89 had a new Reference number from the YC with cal 854x, but the cal 89 in it, with '17 Jewels' and 'adjusted to 3 positions', (the regular cal 89 has 16 rubis) did not require a suffix, e.g. 891 or something to that effect.

Clepsydra: are those IG endlinks on the manual YC?
