Have recently bought a second hand IWC flieger 3706.
The day changes at approx 12pm but the date about 2.30am. Is this acceptable or can I change it?

That's not in the normal range, but if in doesn't bother you too much (it's still in the middle of the night) you can have it looked after when the watch is due for a service (it'll be fixed anyway during test then). If it bothers you right now, let a skilled (IWC) watchmaker have a look at it.
I always ask my watchmaker to shift calendar switch to end at 02:00 from ending at 24:00. First, when awake between 23:00 and 24:00 I prefer to see the calendar not yet switching and second, I have two more hours at eveningtime to set the calendar at the end of short months, e. g. till 22:00 and not till 20:00 which is often the need.
