Hello my dear friends of IWC

I bought a beautiful vintage IWC in 18 K gold. It is handwound and I'm pretty
sure that it must be a Caliber 83. I especially like the Portugieser style
dial and hands. There are even the "small rings" (there must be a special term
for that) on the small second's
    subdial:

Special is also the back of the watch, which says, that it was a
    "Complimentary gift of IWC":

Does anyone know, wether this is seldom and makes my watch even more special?
For what occasions did IWC give this kind of watches out? I know that there
are watches for sports schooting festivals. But wouldn't then be written the
Place and the Year of the festival?

I'm very gratefull for any information and thoughts. Thank you very much

Hello Philipp, indeed a very nice watch.

I believe it is not a SchutzenUhr, a watch for the shooting festivals. IWC
only made one wristwatch for the Schutzenfesten to my knowledge, the rest were
    pocketwatches.

IWC was for long time a brand that often was chosen by companies to give a
watch to employees working for 25/30/... years for that company.

Most of the time the name of the employee and company was engraved, together
    with some dates.

So yours is different, came as a gift by IWC, rare to see. Difficult to know
    who got it and why.

I have found out more about my watch. I've ordered a Certificate from
Schaffhausen. It's a Ref. 333 with Caliber 83 and was delivered in 1943.

Unfortunatley, there was nothing mentioned about the engraving and where it
went to. So, I e-mailed IWC and got an answer from Mr. Seyffer, the Museum's
curator. The engraving is mentioned in the books and was therefore made in-
house by IWC. He said, that the watch went to the Horseclub of Schaffhausen.
It's not known, whether it was a prize on a horse riding competition or for a
long-time member. Anyway, I'm very happy about this information. What a great
Service by IWC to provide my special watch's History!

What an interesting bit of IWC and Schaffhausen history you have shown us.
I'm glad Dr. Seyffer was able to provide you with the answer to the case back
    engraving.

    Thanks for sharing.
