Hi all. New to the forums, but I feel like I've learned a ton about this
venerable IWC caliber already. I've got my eyes on one the I believe to be
genuine/original, but would love an expert's opinion on.
As far as I can tell, the dial has not been restored and the hands are
original. Serial numbers from the movement and case would place production to
the early 1950s. I've tried searching online for the differences between
calibers 89, 401, and 402, and all I can determine is that the 89 has 'Swiss'
engraved below 'International Watch Co', while the 40x has it to the right.
Am I missing anything else about those movements? Also, the caseback is
stamped with the IWC Probus Scafusia emblem, but does not have 'INTERNATIONAL
WATCH CO SWISS' stamped as I've seen in some other examples. And of course
I'd love to hear if there's anything I'm missing. Thanks in advance.
