Dick posted some excellent thoughts on the small details that drive decisions to buy watches. In looking for a shot of the moonphase of my 5251, I blew up a picture to find that the underside of the minute hand was very different to the finished side.

This is also an attempt to upload a photo from my flickr account.

My, this IS details and an excellent one. Blown up indeed. Thanks for sharing. I would have sent some as well but cannot due to the preview not working. Great Moonphase.

Wow, Ralph, that is a very interesting discovery. Did you purposefully take that shot when you noted the difference? Whatever, it is interesting.

Great shot Ralph. I am going to take a closer look of mine when I get free...

I'd like to be able to say that I set everything up with the purpose of photographing the darkside of the minute hand but that would be a lie. I do recall setting up my kit to take some macro shots with a small aperture on my macro lens to get greater depth of field. I still don't understand why the underside of the hand looks so rough.

Great shot, Ralph! Whether it was lucky or you're that darned good, it's a fantastic shot and an interesting discovery.

    Ralph,
Great shot. But since the "mirror" is gold and rough textured, so is the reflection. My guess is that the underside of the hand looks no different than the top.

I tend to agree with Alan.

I disagree. The underside has what appears to be very linear striations as from grinding. This is a very different appearance than the moon has. I think the underside was ground flat, but not painted or finished as the visible side was.

So who wants to volunteer to take their watch apart so we will all know the answer?

I agree with Dick on this one. Reflection color will not change. In fact, if you look at the inside of the Brequet circle in reflection, it is black just as is the top.

Ralph, great capture of the reflection on the underside of the minute hand! I must try that with the Silver moon on the VC Portofino!

have to also agree that it certainly looks like a linear brushing in the underside.

To further muddy up the waters I took this shot of my GST perpetual. Different watch with a white sweep hand but the reflection (perhaps shadow) is not what I expected. I cannot believe that the underside of that hand is not white. Optical illusion? Maybe.

Hey Alan, I see what you are seeing. However, there is a difference between reflection and shadow, so it begs the question as to "which is it?"

In your photo, it has to be the reflection :-)
