    Hello All

I know that old (before 2006) IWC portuguese 3714 had movements calibre 79240 and then were changed to a new movement 79350. Does anyone know the difference between both movements? is one better then the other and why were they changed?

The old ones look nicer but anyway, they sit behind the case what really matter is how better one is from another and the reason why they were changed.

    110 ---but seriously...

...the main difference is decoration. The 79240 was gold-plated, and the 79350 was nickel plated, with different striping. This was done to make all the movements have a "Schaffhausen" historical/engineered look.

You can find out more if you search the archives for prior posts. One is here

    I suggest using a keyword like "79350".

    Good luck,
    Michael

    that's not correct...

The gold to nickel plating was a plan developed by the former technical director (Herr Eisenegger) way before the outsourcing of any assembvly and certainly applied to all movements, not just cal. 79xxx's. I met with him in about 2003 when he talked about the transition, and showed me the drawings. He wanted:

    1. uniformity of look of all IWC movements
    2. using nickel since it was more historically based on the IWC pocket watch movements from the 1930s onwards
    3. using nickel because it is somewhat more scratch resistant than gold
    4. a distinctive "industrial" look with special striping that was particular to IWC

Outsourcing wasn't an issue --it actually was more work to order the ETA kits with the special striping he developed.
