    Hi Darius
I will try answer your question as simply as I can, quoting where necessary from IWC Literature:

    The Portuguese
When first introduced, represented watches of technical precision of the highest order, with accuracies of a Marine Chronometer, based on pocket watch movements. The modern Portuguese with Cal. 5000 movements combine tradition and new technology in a balanced and classically inspired design.

    The Portofino
Represents the Easy-Going Mediterranean life style of sports cars and the jet-set. Portofinos are classically elegant, stylish and understated.

Technically, both families have many models with different Calibers so that becomes difficult to discuss. Which models are you referring to specifically?
