The balances and the screws of these balances are different.

    • The balance of the C.67 has two incisions. The ring is not closed.

    • The balance of the C.952 is closed and the screws have no slots for a screwdriver.

Presumably, the technical principle of these balances is different.

What could be the technical reason for the different balance construction ?

The c. 67 has an old style, bimetallic split balance, which was an early form of temperature compensation. You can read about that by clicking here.

The cal. 952 has a more modern balance using Glycdur, a metal that handles temperature compensation. I'm unsure about the lack of screw heads, but some screws are adjusted using special wrenches rather than screwdrivers.

    Thanks Michael.
Walt Odets provides an excellent overview on the balance wheel, perfectly understandable for non-watchmakers.
