I still have mine and still wear it regularly. It was the first time I saw the
Big Pilot in the metal and I was blown away. It certainly disrupted my
perception of what I wanted in a watch; once large and even slightly
cumbersome on the wrist, it's prominence is now a welcome familiarity that
    I've come to love.

    The 500401 I purchased in April 2008:

    Yessir!

I too have my first IWC. I was introduced to IWC by uncles who owned watches
    known simply as SCHAFFHAUSEN.

One had a Cal 89, the other, a gold automatic with a black dial and gold
Indeces. When I first saw an IWC 3706 - I was smitten and decided I had to
have one! But by the time i could afford it, 3717 was released and I bought
    one of these instead.

I am so attached to this watch that it will never leave my collection!

    Good question,

yes i still have it. And it is still a restoration - reassembling project. I
bought it in 1993, it is Ref. 1014a, Cal 403 witha a very nice blue dial.
    Movement Number dates to 1971.

I bought my first IWC (a new pocket watch) and my second IWC (a new old stock
wrist watch Cal. 88) when still a student. And of course I still have both!

Yes. That was a 3706 on Mk.I. bracelet, bought new in 1996. Next year I'll
pass it to my younger daughter as a highschool graduate present.

My first IWC was a Porsche Design Titan automatic chronograph reference 3700.
I bought it as a used watch in 1989 SIGHT UNSEEN! When it arrived, I was
disappointed that it didn't resemble the traditional chronographs of the early
60's that I had been collecting. I sold it a year later.

Fast forward twenty years to 2010. I recalled the Titan and decided I would
appreciate the design. It quickly became my favorite watch, and I became
obsessed with the model. I now have three, including two of the first series
that were sold in April 1981 and one of the latest ones (with a caliber 7922)
from 1996. All totaled, I have personally owned ten different Titan watches. I
consider myself an expert on the model, even if some of the history is based
    on my best guesses.

Which brings me to a question for @hansgoerter: If your first IWC was a
Porsche Design Titan Chrono, then you bought it in 1981 or later. If you
bought the watch in Zurich in 1975, it is not an IWC but rather an Orfina. As
a person obsessed with the IWC PD Titan, I am happy to be mistaken if the
    evidence supports it!

I wish I did have my Portugieser chrono, but it still is with IWC in Texas.
Maybe they will finally fix or replace it one of these days. It's about two
months since I heard from them last. How long does it typically take IWC to
replace a watch? This is its third trip to the service center.
