New proud owner of a Portofino 8 day (510104) - interested if anyone has any experience of wearing this watch to play golf, any risk to the movement?

Shock primarily affects the balance wheel and the rotor of a movement. Since your 5101 is manually wound and does not have a rotor, only its balance will be susceptible. This is why the IWC equips the caliber 59210 with an incabloc protected balance for adequate shock-protection. Also, IWC states that it rigorously tests all of its watches (article: www.iwc.com/en/experiences/test-lab/).

However, given the degree of shock induced onto the watch while playing golf (especially during a tee off!), its best not to expose any mechanical watch (IWC or otherwise) to such shocks. Though I wear my pilots doppel thoughout most rigorous activities, I always draw the line when hitting the green!

As a matter of principle, you should avoid strong vibrations and impacts (e.g. when playing golf or tennis, mountain biking etc.). A mechanical wristwatch is a precision instrument whose manufacture involves working to tolerances of hundredths or even thousandths of a millimetre. Repeated sharp impacts can have a negative influence on the movement’s accuracy or even cause damage.[/i]

I think you can play golf with your watch, it's up to you.

If you do it, is about the same as parking a new Ferrari in the sea spray on a cliff, it's a question of respect.
