My grandfather passed away about 45 years ago, but I only inherited it
recently. He wore it every day from the time he bought it in the late 50s. My
grandmother had the watch ever since. My mom knew the watch existed, but she
knew nothing about the brand. When my grandmother passed recently and they
were cleaning out her apartment, they came across the watch. Knowing I liked
watches, my mom gave me a call and asked if I knew anything about a company
called "International Watch Company". We were able to get it to run for a bit,
even though it had been sitting for 45 years. We found a local IWC authorized
service center that was very familiar with the caliber 89 (as well as Porsche
Design watches). Though it came on a custom gold bracelet, I really wanted a
leather strap. The gent at the service center was kind enough to pull out a
NOS 18mm IWC band and accompanying IWC 18kt gold buckle for me to purchase. He
also gave the movement and case a nice cleaning, brining it to the beautiful
condition it's in today. I plan on wearing it primarily for special occasions
and holidays, but I'll admit it's tempting to wear it much more often.
