Certainly the latest hand wound movements available in the current IWC range do not have a date complication in the Hand Wound movements.......from the VC collection to the Minute Repeater.

Are there previous hand wound models featuring a date complication ?

    Happy Sunday.

They are historically rare for all brands

Most date models evolved with the advent of automatic movements, and due to settting issues were far more common with automatic movements. An automatic movement by staying wound kept the correct date except 4 (or 5 in a leap year) times a year. This was an era when most people wore one watch all the time.

As such, handwind movements with dates --which of course are possible-- are rare for all companies. They do exist, but quickly I can't recall any for IWC except for some perptuals.

    Regards,
    Michael

Do you consider the Moon Phase on the Portofino >

Would you consider the moon phase on the VC Portofino Moon Phase (Hand wound) Cal. 98800 similar to a date complication?

Perhaps this is exactly what you mean Andrew -

I was at my IWC agent last week inspecting the Portofino Moon Phase - and I could not figure out how to advance, or set the moon phase. The crown only had one position - to wind, or set the time. We could only conclude that the only way to advance the moon phase display - was to keep advancing the time, with the moon advancing at "mid-night".

Can one of our Forum Members with a VC Portofino Moonphase confirm this, please?

    Many thanks.

    Richard

That is a very handsome Perpetual...

I understand that this IWC "Portofino Romano Perpetual" is the thinnest perpetual calendar watch.

    I love the blued hands.

    You are correct, Richard

I set mine by my PPC to get the phase correct and then make sure it stays wound. It can take a while to set, if you are many days off the correct phase. You cannot go backwards, btw.

    similar but definitely

not the same in my simplistic assessment of reading the date.

It is indeed a good thought to go back to the history of tracking the months in this way.

    Thanks for your comments all.

    The once off ...

.. Ref 3710 chronograph is the first manual wind wristwatch with date indication that I can recall.

Apologies to the owner of the image - I could not find an image in the archive so I uploaded an image saved to hard disk long ago.

    Cheers from the cellar

Good thinking Nicky because, many manual wound >

movements tend to be dress watches, like pocket watches. Of course there are always execptions, with some tool pocket watches too.

    Cheers from Isobars.

a "date window" is still an elusive

(but not exclusive) feature though to my knowledge.
Thanks Cellar - I was not aware of this model.

    only need

to replace the moon phase disk with a set of date numbers disk and then it's a date complication.
