Congratulations with this icon and I guess it is your birthday presen!
this is a real masterpiece and the only IWC watch of which the 'sun hand'
makes one revolution in one year.by a direct reduction, powered by the wheel
train. Zodiacs were normally made at large size for turret clocks Some
figures:
The sun hand moves 0.986 degrees per year or 0.392 mm per day at the tip. If
one multplies 0.986 x 365, one gets 359.890 degrees, approaching 360 degrees
by 0.11 degrees per year. If the sun hand would move one thousandth of a
degree more per day, the figure would be 0.987 x 365 is 360.255 degrees per
year, making the watch slightly more inaccurate. For a leap year the watch is
corrected over the crown.
The watch was realised by Reinard Meis - a famous author of watch books- and
Gunther Blumlein, IWC's CEO in 1980. They worked together with the
Laboratoire Suisse de Recherche Horlogere to find a suitable shape of the
wheels to achieve an optimal transmission between them. Very few 'Zodiacs'
were made.
