    Dear IWC / Forum Members,

I would kindly ask your help identifying a friend's IWC pocket watch.

I believe the case is made of silver and it has International Watch Company written on the dial (which seems porcelain).

There are no inscriptions on the case back, and neither on the inside of it.

The movement is marked with a serial number of 363208.

The IWC PROBUS SCAFUSIA round marking is present in the movement.

Uppon inserting it "Date your IWC" applet pointed out on this forum for identification, it returns the following:

LÈp. calibre 52, dating from the year 1906.

I'm not sure if the serial number is meant to be input as "movement number".

Any information on this model and history would be much apprecitated. If there is any idea on what a pocket watch like this could cost at the time would be interesting to know too.

I have created a Dropbox picture album with some pictures to help on the identification task.

Detailed Pictures are located here: goo.gl/s94Ttf

Thank you in advance for your help.
Kind Regards from sunny Lisbon, Portugal
    Pedro

    Greetings fellow IWC Forum Members

I've updated the pictures with Photobucket links as the Dropbox ones weren't working.

    Hope someone can help me.

    Thanks

You got it --it's a calibre 52 movement and produced in 1906. There's more info if you search this forum on the movement and also on my pocket watch website. Too bad the dial has hairline cracks; it's enamel and not porcelain.

It is very uncommon to have a watch from 1906 with a snap on back.
From my point of view, IWC did not use such cases in 1906 .
But portugal was special for the import of watches, may be the movement was cased in Portugal.
Is there a back and what is the serial number of the case?

    regards

    Ralph

    Dear Ralph,

    Thank you for your insight.

I did look all over for a case number, but haven't found any which I found odd. As I'm more into vintage wrist watches than pocket watches I thought it could be something characteristic of these types of watches.

Neither the caseback or the inside of it have any number of word written. I've attached pictures below.

Could it be a "less noble" range of watches that for some import reason have been re-cased in Portugal?

The caseback has almost microscopic hand engravings with the typical watchmaker last revision date. The two dates are from the late 1950s.

Out of curisoity, why was Portugal special?

    Thank once again.
    Regards
    Pedro
