I am new to this forum. I have two of my grandfather's watches and I would like to learn more information about them. One is a pocket watch I believe to be from the 1929. I have never seen the curling on the side of the pocket watch like this and the chain I believe to be original.

The other is a gold wrist watch from I think the 40's or 50's. I will put the wristwatch in another post so the pics are separate.

    Thank you for your help.

Thank you! This is the wrist watch. I had a new crystal put on it. Both watches run great.

Very nice pocket watch which you were able to self identify.
Sometime during it's life, someone has left fingerprints on the dial. With some forensic investigation, perhaps you could identify who left them ;-)

The wrist watch is a Cal 89 from early 50s. It resembles ref 371 and the reference or model number may or may not be stamped in the case back.
The Cal 89 was in production for a very long time 1946 to 1976.

Thank you! I think the fingerprints were either my grandfathers or my mom. the lens came off and I just had a new one put on to protect it.

The wrist watch info was very helpful. I searched it and looks just like it, but I guess I need to get into it to get the numbers off the inside. Do you think I could just pop it open to see the number and then snap it back together with our damaging it?

    Thank you!

Depends on your experience with a case opening knife.
If you haven't done it before, I would not suggest it as the gold is soft and can mar very easily. I would say it's not worth it as ref number was not always put in during this era.

Wait till you have the watch serviced and ask the watchmaker to either photograph the insides or to write down all the numbers for you.

I just had it at my watch guy and he put a new lens on it. Forgot to ask, was too excited. I am not worried about the prying part. Its once it is open do i risk damaging the inside with dust or anything like that. I am very mechanically inclined, recently replaced the curved screen on my samsung galaxy s7 edge without breaking the glass-most repair shop dont do that. I actually have hardened plastic wedges and tools used for that which would work well here and not damage the gold. so I would be extremely careful opening it.

Also what do you think about trying to clean the face of the pocket watch "GENTLY" .

So I got it open, pretty easy. No movement number, but the case had a number and it went back to a date of 1950. Does anyone know of any info on movement? Is this the correct movement, legitimate and authentic?

Interested in peoples opinions. It is working nicely. Any idea of the value of this or the pocket watch on the market?

We don't discuss values of watches. The Forum is for the enjoyment and discussion of fine timepieces.

That looks to be a good Cal 89 movement and you will find a number between two of the bridges.

You will find all you need to know re Cal 89 here:
    Caliber 89

So I opened it and got better pics of the numbers and it has a movement from 1948 and case from 1950. Calibre 89.

Another question please. does anyone think that the dial has been retouched at all?

Also, I know the movement is a cal 89 but does the watch have a name, style name, model name?

    Thank you,
