I think your watch is a Caliber 401 from the mid 1960s.
To be completely certain, we would need to see the movement and serial numbers
on the movement and on the inside caseback.

worth sending it to Schaffhausen?
If you have no experience at opening cases, I would not recommend you doing
it.
Any experienced and reliable watchmaker can open the case for you, give you
the details and service the watch.
Only send the watch to Schaffhausen if you intend fully restoring it, which
will be costly.
Get it serviced and enjoy this wonderful memory of your father. It's a very
nice IWC .
