    Hi.

I'd like to know as much as possible about the watch I inherited from my
grandfather a long time ago. Gold watches are not my thing, so it's hardly
been used, but the few times I put it on for a few minutes, it runs like a
    charm.

The watch is an automatic and has a pie pan dial and a gold bracelet.

The diameter is about 36 mm. Lug width is perhaps 36,5 mm as the lug in "sunk"
into the case. There are no other markings except the number "3" stamped on
both side of the clasp mechanism.

I'm considering taking it to a watchmaker, but afaik this might cost more than
what the watch costs (a service costs about $500 and upwards where i live).

    All info is much appreciated.

    Thanks!

Your Grandfather left you a fantastic IWC Pie Pan, more than likely containing
a Cal 854 with Pellaton Winding System. This Caliber is considered one of the
    finest
movements of the time - 1960s to 1970s.

It will be well worth servicing the watch. It is far more valuable than the
    service expense.

    Hi SMALAHOVE,

i would rather bet on an older reference like 9372AD. It is definitely
equipped with a calibre 8521 or 8531, those have a smaller date ring, which
    moves
the date indicator more towards the center of the dial. I have checked the
Catalog of References but there are to many different references having the
    pie pan dial.

Is the bracelet also IWC signed?

    Hi Cromagnonman.

    thanks for the info!

i've been able to capture a few of the markings on the clock: fish on the
crown, a hand ingraved # on the back and in the same pic, a stamp on the
    bracelet.

The bracelet is almost certainly a 'Milanese' used by IWC during that period.

On its own it is worth already than the sum you have to pay for the watch
    service.

I just wanted to ask if you would be prepared to sell the bracelet from this
    watch?

I note that you don't wear gold so perhaps you would be willing to sell it?

Thanks for the interest, but I'm keeping the watch all original.
