    Hi,

I inherited this watch from my Great Grandfather a good few years ago and I've
never been able to pinpoint which model it is or a year. I believe it's
cal.88, but all my searches only bring up watches that are similar but not
exactly the same (e.g., there is no part of the number 6 visible whereas the
images I'm finding all have a partly visible bottom of the number 6).

I'd appreciate any help/advice that identifies the specific model and year.

Watch has been in the box since it was presented to my Great
    grandfather

What a beautiful watch and what a story it could tell!

I agree that it is most likely a cal 88 - but production of cal 88 ended in
1964. It is probably a variation of one of the watches shown below, from 1974
    catalogue.

The only way to tell for sure is to have the watch opened by a watchmaker. The
referance number may or may not be engraved inside the caseback. But the case
number and movement number will help identify and date it for you.

    Thanks
    so much for your help.

I took the watch to a Jewellers and they took the case back off for me and
said the hallmark is 9ct Gold dated between 1970-1971.

It is Cal.88 - My only other question is in regard to the serial number
stamped on the caseback - It doesn't seem to match up with 1970 as the date.

The watch was bought from Garrard and Co Jewellers - might they have ordered a
special batch of these watches to sell as 'retirement' gifts?

    Many thanks,

The caseback serial number is curious?

What is the serial number on the movement, there next to the regulator - I
    cannot make it out?

Do you think the case back may be not original and provided by the jewellers
for the purpose of being engraved?

This also raises the question of whether the watch is 18ct gold and just the
    case back 9ct?

I have no explanation regarding the caseback.

the numbers 15329*4 substituting 1 to 9 for * all give a result of Cal 89
    from 1960

we need more accurate details in order to help you further

Thank You for the clearer pictures.

The case still remains a mystery however. In most Cal 88 and 89 models, the
movement spacer ring is usually stamped METAL , which is not visible here.

The movement number confirms it to be Cal 88 produced in 1962.

My opinion (you maybe dont like it):

IWC movement recased on an other Brand case, not an IWC model / Ref.

    Hi SRPHOTO,

the D.S & S Hallmark in the Caseback is from an english case manufacturer
    named David Sutton & Sons.

It is not unusual to find IWC movements in cases produced by other
    manufacturers.

The IWC factory ledgers would tell if the more if the movement was sold with
    or without case.

Suspect the case is from D Shackman & Sons NOT David Sutton & Sons

The watch is in wonderful condition, never seen a 18kt watch out of clayton
    aniline, seen a dozen 9kt
variants...Mr. Dreyfuss ( the owner) or his family obviously had a
Schaffhausen thing going on. They are not there anymore, the factory/site is
currently Manchester City f.c.'s training ground.
