Back in the market for a new Portugieser. I had one years ago that was stolen (it was a 3714).
Very torn between the 5007 (Automatic) and 3903 (Chronograph Classic), both in rose gold. I traveled to a nearby city to try them on and after 4 visits I am still uncertain. It is a big purchase for me, no doubt. Below are the pros and cons as I see it (which is probably a bit un-informed):
Pros for the 5007 (Portugieser Automatic):
Love the history.
Love the sapphire-glass back and the beautiful movement.
Love the power reserve.
Love the face of the watch more than the 3903 -- I love to look at it!
Love the deployment buckle which comes standard (I have lost watches without them...)
Cons of the 5007:
A bit too thick and a bit top heavy in feeling. Not sure if I will get over this.
Might be difficult with cuff and suit.
Might be a bit too pretentious in a business setting (I know Stainless would be less but I want a gold watch. It feels more like a "chunk of gold" to an uninformed eye (like my wife's ...)
Less usable when wearing very casual clothes.
Pros of the 3903 (Portugieser Chronograph Classic):
It's been redesigned and feels now more like a Portugieser!
It fits better on the wrist. It's subtle but it seems to lay better. It is thinner (by 0.5mm) and a slightly smaller diameter (by 0.3mm), but it feels like a smaller watch.
It's more sporty. You can dress it up and down easier. The chronograph functions make it feel more like sports watch and a bit less pretentious, in my humble opinion.
Might use the Chrono function, but rarely. But I like the buttons more than the face of the watch.
Cons of the 3903:
Do not like the face of the watch as much as the 5007.
Comes with a Tang Buckle and will have to get a deployment buckle for it. Not a cheap proposition.
The sapphire-glass back is not nearly as impressive as the 5007.
Does not have the history of the 5007 and feels like less of a collector's item in the long run.
Thanks for your thoughts. Not an easy decision so thought I would get opinions --
