I have recently inherited my great great grandfathers gold pocket watch, he
    was
3 times Prime Minister of Spanish and was assassinated while wearing it in
    1921
but I would love to know the exact year of the watch and any other info would
    be greatly appreciated! Many thanks

This watch then has a significant history for your family and is a great
    family heirloom.

From what I can see of the serial number (32760) it is either a Cal 52 or 53
    dating from 1888.

Many, many thanks Mark, it does certainly beat my modern IWC. What I can read
in the middle case is: DOUBLE PLATEAU and then in italics things like: ligne
    visibles spiriel breguet 15 rubies n 40216

Thank you again and kind regards,

    Javier

It is even older as cal 52 it is a forerunner of cal. 52. The forerunners had
a semi-circular cut out of the threequarter plate for the balance wheel ( like
yours) ,while the cut out in the later version was 'S'-shaped. A watch with
such history should stay untouched, but if you feel that the dial should be
replaced for an undamaged one, you can look on ebay, where these are still
offered for a fair price ( even if you have to buy the complete watch : a few
    hundred euros).

    Thanks for showing us.

    Adrian,

Adding to what Adrian has said, I believe this movement may be classified as a
calibre 49. Although you may want to replace the dial to return it to its
former glory, I have no proble with keeping it the way it is, maybe just have
it cleaned - especially as this watch has a significant personal history. I
    love it.

Welcome, Great Great Grandfather of Eduardo Dato (Wikipedia).

That piece is historic and must be of exceptional emotional and historic value
    for you.

Don't replace the dial. You can have it cleaned (maybe slightly polished) and
    serviced.

Enjoy this beauty and wear it well. and a warm welcome to this forum. It's
still a great place to find IWC knowledge and like minded people, even friends
for life can be found here. ;-)
