A customer called me on the phone asking what can be done to his broken IWC IW378601 Black Ceramic Pilot's Watch Double Chronograph case. My first reaction was how “could” it break and would he e-mail me a photo so I can assess the damage. Above is a picture he sent me which led me to research the subject matter.

Click on link to download an article I put together.

A great article and great information Jack...

It is painful to see that beautiful watch with a "chunk" out of the side.

Thanks Jack, at least I know what to do...

if I break my doppel somehow. I had no idea that there was a metal case underneath. I also thought that hardness and toughness were more or less the same thing. I know better now.

How hard & durable are ceramic cases?

I am sorry this happened... but its definitely the case with ceramics.... I had the same chip but way way smaller that the pic. Somehow when the case is too hard it becomes brittle... sigh...

Thanks Jack, I must admit that >>>>

....I probably got about 50%, LOL

It was still an interesting read and 50% is better than nothing ;-)))

Thanks Jack, I guess the lesson is to put ...

... the watch on above the carpet rather than a hard tiled floor.

Looks like it hit right on the edge of the case, I surprised there is not a crack in the sapphire crystal as well.

    Cheers from the cellar

Arghhh that is my worst nightmare that pic!

Better hold onto my beloved Ceramic double very tightly.
Thats the thing with Ceramic - it is very hard and no scratches but if it falls or gets hit the wrong way....that is just its chemical properties.
I discussed the properties of Ceramic with my dad who is a chemist when I bought this watch and sure am trying never to let it fall! I feel very sorry for your customer that hurts.

Thanks for the great article as this is the first time I have seen this info all together!

    Always appreciate your insights.

I send Best Wishes to the customer for a speedy repair

I think PVD coated platinum might be a better choice ;-)
