My great grandfather got this pocket watch around 1860. He gave it to my father, who is giving it to my son. Since we live in Germany, it is now hung up in customs. I need to give customs a value for the watch so that they can charge import duty. In my research, I think I have identified the watch as a Jones "R" model (although I came across something called "Hunter Pocket Watch SNO= 6 Digits - whatever that means). The serial number is 86818. I've tried to upload some photos - I hope it worked.
Any help you can give me about a value, or where I could look it up, would be greatly appreciated. Customs obviously won't give me the watch to have it appraised.

Marc, a nice watch that does look like a Jones from the outside. But the Jones' serial numbers stopped at about 24,000. And if it is a Jones, it most likely wasn't sold in Germany.

I suspect it might be a later model, like a Seeland or Elgin. You can see some examples of those on my pocket watch website, iwcpocketwatch.com

Therefore --can you please have some photos of the movement shown here? Close-ups of the serial numbers, etc. might also help.

Thanks Michael - unfortunately those are the only pictures I have of it. Customs won't let me take it for closer inspection until I pay the duty on it. They have arbitrarily set the value of the watch at € 4,500, meaning the duty would be about € 900. I'm trying to figure out if that is really what the watch is worth - I don't want to way overpay on the duty. Do you know of any websites where pricing of similar watches might be given? Obviously I'm looking for as low a valuation as possible. Thanks again.

    Hi Marc,

It looks like a Jones to me although of course one would need to see the movement for confirmation. The inscription on the dial is absolutely Jones and nothing like Seeland or anything else.
I think you have got the serial number wrong.

    Alan
