Many of you--especially newbies-- may not know about the late Frederich ("Fritz") Wagener, who passed away in 2007. Fritz was a real IWC vintage expert and collector --perhaps the singularly most knowledgeable person in the world about early IWC pocket watches.

Fritz' name on this forum was "earlyiwc" and it fit him perfectly. It's worthwhile browsing through the archives for posts by "earlyiwc", although in all or almost all instances the images are no longer shown.

Fritz also had a website about IWC called "zeitwerke.com". Shortly before he passed away he took it down, and wrote me with some sadness "The decision to shut it down is mainly caused by my present state of health. So I aim to retire gradually from the 'World of IWC'." The website was then reinstituted for a short time, and there was some talk about continuing it by others, but then after Fritz' passing it was discontinued.

This of course was a loss for many of us. However, I've found a few pages using a "wayback" site, and have included links to them below. This is in memory and honor of Fritz.

    Regards,
    Michael

    A sad loss.......

maybe worth adding as much as possible to your own website MF for future reference for those interested particularly in pocket watches?

I regret I did not have the opportunity...

to know this gentleman. From your description, it sounds like we lost a good colleague and valuable resource with his passing. Thanks for giving us 'newbies' the opportunity to see some of his work...although I was only able to view the title page with all the links provided.

    Best regards,
    Jim

    Sometimes

you feel a loss for people you have never met before and all it takes is a story to make you realise that this little something in common you shared was more than enough to make you feel sad.
A noble thought Michael thank you.

    links are fixed....

...the software "converted" everything to the first link --weird. But editing them appears to work.

In memory of Fritz Wagener's Zeitwerke.com

Thank you MF that you remember Friedrich Wagener.
Friedrich Wagener was one of the experts regarding pocket watches and he had an incredible collection..
Those who knew him personally, knew Frederick Wagener was a difficult man but his knowledge of clocks was beyond any doubt.
His website was a known meeting point for those interested in pocket watches.
One of the last time that I met him was when he organized the exhibition at the jeweler "Telgmann" in Kamen, his home town.
I often meet people who ask me about his website and F. Wagener.

    He is not forgotten!

    Thanks MF!
PS: here is a link to my report of the exhibition mentioned above. Although the report is in German you will see beautiful and mostly very seldom pocket watches and watches.
    Have fun!

Thank you for posting the link

    Hi Hans,

I still have my invitation to the exhibition. Fritz was kind enough to extend an invitation even though he new that the chances of attending, from Australia, were slim.

    Cheers from the cellar

Fritz was so helpful to me when I was starting....

In fact, he "let me trade him" a nice IWC PW for a cal. 89!

    I miss him!
