    Hi everyone

This is my first post to the forum. I inherited two IWC timepieces from my
late grandfather many years ago. They sat in a safety deposit box for years,
and now I am considering having them fixed. My mother told me they both do
    not work.

One is a pocketwatch, the other is a wrist watch. Please see the images
below. Any help in identifying the model numbers and approximate values would
    be appreciated.

I have been told by the local IWC store that they can diagnose the problems at
no charge, so I will likely go that route, but your guidance here is greatly
    appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi Brandon,

Now that's what i call an inheritance! Oh, so nice watches.

The wristwatch looks to be from the 50's probably with a movement called
caliber 89, which is one of the best. The pocket watch is more difficult to
put an age on, they made so many different styles.

If you take them to a competent watchmaker (not one that can only change
batteries) you can get help with opening the cases. Take pictures of the
movements and note the numbers on the movements and on the inside of the
casebacks. With those pictures and numbers we can tell you a little more about
when the watches were made. Or google DateYoutIWC and see for yourself.

As to service, the same competent watchmaker might be able to fix them, but
IWC is definitely your best bet.

    Best regards,

    Henrik

Thank you gentlemen. I have left the watches at my local IWC boutique and
they are sending them away for diagnosis. I will keep you updated. I really
appreciate your assistance. Do any of you have any idea what these type of
watches are worth? IWC is quoting me quite a bit for repair / restoration and
I want to know if it is worth the significant cost.

Brandon, both very nice time pieces.

The pocket watch is intriguing in as much that it looks like it's been
either ordered originally as a high end watch and/or been customized. Is that
a ring of mother of pearl on the dial?

I don 't recall having seen a Schaffhausen cased pocket watch with that
triangular like crown guard / top end of the case. Now of course, that does
not mean it did not leave the manufactury like that but it could be a sign of
a non IWC case. You do not say where the watches / your grandfather would have
originally bought/worn these beauties (but to some of us your alias points to
the Cape!) If the location was USA it may possibly be a Cal. 67 cased locally
in the states. To me, the case does not look like a Cresarrow case - but again
it may be a one of and unique.

without movement and case numbers we can 't really give you much more info -
but if they indicate on the pocket watch that the numbers are matching
(meaning that movement left Schaffhausen cased in that case) and dependent on
movement type and finish and wether 14k or 18k gold, the pocketwatch watch is
worth probably anywhere between $1250 and $2400.

Either way, getting both to a SPA treatment in Schaffhausen is going to
see you have these family heirlooms ticking again and good for another 200
plus years - so definitely worth it .

I inherited a very similar watch from my grandfather. I just got it serviced
by Superior Watch in Brooklyn, NY. I highly recomend Jack. He is an authorized
service center for IWC and Porsche Design. I asked the IWC boutique in NY for
a quote and they wanted to ship it to Switzerland and their response on price
was "expensive". Jack gave me a reasonable quote but my watch was in good
condition. It didn't need any parts and ran. We have went to him in the past
besides my more recent experience and I highly recomend him!

    Hello Everyone,

I appreciate your quick replies. I have since gotten my wristwatch back from
IWC who restored and serviced it in Switzerland. Expensive but in my opinion,
totally worth the cost. It looks brand new! The pocket watch was opened up.
Here are the numbers so I hope that you can help me with identifying it:

    900228

    934988 - on the cover

I don't know if that helps with identifying the pocket watch, but your help is
    greatly
    appreciated.
