I'm in the early stages of watch collecting and I wonder if somebody can help.
I am looking at a vintage IWC at auction but on the dial it says,
INTERNATIONAL WATCH with SCHAFFHAUSEN underneath. The font is in capitals. Is
    this an ACTUAL IWC?

    I'll attach a picture.

Thank you in advance for your
    help.

    Hi,

My guess is that this is an IWC from the mid-50ies with a repainted dial. The
repaint is not very professional. The watch could be a ref 500, and the
movement a cal 8521 or 8531. But this is pure guesswork.

To make sure you need to post a picture of the movement (but take it to a
competent watchmaker to open the case) and also a picture of the inside of the
    caseback.

There should be a serial number on the movement and another (different) on the
caseback. If you google DateYourIWC you will find a page where you can use
these numbers to find out some more about the watch.

    Good luck!

    Henrik

I agree Henrik. The dial has been repainted.

Thank you for the info very useful.

I have a Pilots Spitfire Chrono but would like a dress IWC. The estimates are
£200-400 and I don't want to overpay. I can get the work done to get it back
to a good standard but I'm cautious as to how much I should pay for it. Any
    ideas?

    Thanks Max

We don't generally discuss prices on this Forum, but I can tell you that is a
very low estimate. This definitely reflects the quality of the dial and maybe
    more....

Restoration will cost significantly more. I say search on and get an IWC in
    better condition.

Thank you Mark. I'll take your advice. Unless it stays very low of course!

    Thanks.

I'm wondering if you could elaborate on why you think it has been repainted?
I'm neither agreeing or disagreeing with you; I'm new to this hobby and I'd
love to learn what you're looking at when trying to decide if it has been
repainted. Is it just the font and missing "Co" that gives this one away?

I could be wrong but I'm basing my judgement that the block script is
    incorrect and
the watch in question is missing it's date window surround. Also, the dial
paint has partially covered the seconds indeces at the dial edge

I think it should look like this.......
