Hi, I have an IW377801 double chrono 79420 caliber. Is it safe to run the
    chrono all the time?

    YES, but why??

it runs out eventually, and you need to wind it again..

I do not see reason why not...

Safe yes, but gears will wear faster.

Thanks! I'm obsessed by the chrono movements. I don't wear this watch very
often, probably just 1-2 weekends each month. When I wear it, I would like to
see the big white chrono second hand smoothly circling the dial, such a beauty
    on the wrist!

It is if it's a vertical clutch column wheel chronograph.

Yes, I think it comes down to the clutch / column wheel. If it's vertical it
should be fine (although I guess it may need lubricanting / servicing a bit
sooner). If it's horizontal I think it could have a marginal effect on
    timekeeping (over prolonged use).

Does anyone know if IWC tends to use vertical or horizontal clutches?

High level in-house chrono movement Cal.89XXX is equipped with vertical
clutch, entry level in-house chrono movement Cal.69XXX uses horizontal clutch
    ^_^
