I bought a IWC watch recently with a dial that I suspect might be a redial -
it lacks the "SWISS" at 6, indexes seems to be misplaced (?) etc. I know that
other manufactures sometimes
created dials for IWC with varying quality, including no "SWISS" which makes
it very hard (for me) to determine if its factory original or not. What do you
guys think? The watch in question is a IWC cal. 89 "Cioccolatone" from 1952.

I think it is original.
Look at the minute plots. They project through the dial finish from the plate.
This is comparable to other Cal 89 dials....
Also, the sunburst pattern under the varnish looks good!

i am not so sure that this is original. The inscript is quite big and the
swiss is missing. However there is nothing wrong with the indexes.

I believe it is too difficult for a collector to say redial or not.
The dial on your watch looks 'old' and 'used' and has applied indices with
fine scratches and patina.
For me the following reason is the most important to believe it is an original
dial.
It is an unusual watch from 1952, not sought after by collectors and unknown
to most of them.
Therefore the watch has not an exceptional value. A redial or restauration is
nowadays a costly operation and such procedure is unknown to the average
owner..
Why doing this, if it is doubtful to get back the investment? I mean it is not
a Mark IX, original Portugiese or Jumbo Ingenieur.
Just an opinion.
