I previously relayed the good news the doctoral thesis of David Seyffer, IWC museum curator and very good friend and supporter of collectors, was accepted and he successfully defended it at the University of Stuttgart. The last formal step was publication, and an abstract of it was recently published by the University.

This is great news, and I am sure we all join again in congratulating the new Docktor Seyffer. I kiddingly reminded him that his academic responsibilities have now just begun ;)

If you'd like to read a summary it's at the following link. An English translation starts on page 4:

    Dr. David Seyffer,

Congratulations with achieving such an important milestone. It must be gratifying to reach that milestone. Perhaps it also leaves an "empty feeling" after working so hard.

A virtual toast to your - achieved and upcoming - success.

I will look for the thesis because it looks like a very interesting topic indeed.

    Dr. Seyffer: Congratulations, well done!

While Stuttgart and almost all German universities now accept dissertations in English, I have an email from one of my campus librarians that this is marked as mainly in German in a PhD database. If was in English I would request a copy but my German abilities are highly limited.

There is a well-established private company that archives, licenses, and translates on request PhD dissertations for universities world wide, but services are slow (more than six months) and costly for a translation. The topic is interesting enough that a publisher may very well be interested in translating and putting copies out for sale, if Dr. Seyffer agrees to work with them and in return receive very small royalties compared to what the publisher will eventually sell online.

In any case, congrats to Dr. Seyffer.

    A great achievement.
David Seyffer wrote a thesis that was completely on IWC :
Von der "Internationalen Uhrenfabrik" zur Manufaktur für Luxusuhren. Uhrenfertigung in Schaffhausen am Beispiel der Unternehmungsgeschichte der International Watch Co 1868-1978.
In English : From the International Watch Factory towards manufactory of luxury watches. Making watches in Schaffhausen as an example of the entrepeneurs history of International Watch Co 1868-1878.
His thesis will be published as a book. During the relatively short time that Dr. David Seyffer has been the museum director, this is the second scientific work he has published. It will be a matter of weeks when the book "F.A. Jones. His life, legacy and watches" will be issued. Here is David Seyffer co-author together with Thomas König and Alan Myers ( the expert on Jones watches).
    Congratulations Dr. David.
    Kind regards,
    Adrian.

Ahh, Ralph Ehrismann sent his congratulations.
Ralph is one of the very few IWC experts on P.W.'s, but did you know that Ralph is a Doctor too? I heard this from Friedrich Wagner, many years ago.
In Horology! He wrote a thesis - please correct me Ralph- on the cases of Swiss P.W's.
    Kind regards,
    Adrian,
