[QUOTE="dantan83"]Hi everyone,
This is my first vintage Watch. I purchased it 2 1/2 weeks ago whilst I was in Melbourne to pick up my new Omega Railmaster 60th Anniversary LE.
Apart from the fact that the Calibre is an 89, which I was informed by the Dealer is an excellent movement, what can you tell me about the Watch that I purchased (condition, dial, crown, etc)?
How do I post photos here?
Hello Dan,
Some general historical information on calibre 89.
It was developed in the mid and late 1940-ies by Albert Pellaton, the highly gifted technical director of IWC. Pellaton had joined the company in April 1944. The hand wound movement with central second was a hugh success and about 240.000 movements have been built. Also the iconic navigational watch Mark 11 had this movement and about 8-9000 movements have been allocated to the Mark 11 series. Numerous different dials and cases in steel gold and even platin have been used over the years. However, the fashion and technical developments in Swiss horology called for automatic watches, so the next technical masterpiece by Pellaton was the calibre 85 series of which the Ingenieur, the Yacht Club and the Polo Club were derived.
These were equipped with the famous Pellaton automatic winding system by some watch experts called the best winding system ever.
Calibre 89 and 85 are sought after watches by collectors of vintage watches.
