    Hi all,
i have a 866 with the Reference Number R866A. The watch is dated 1971 wich seems to be the last year of production. Now the watch has a date indicator and and is equipped with the Calibre 8541b. R866A is the Reference for the dateless Version as far as i know. What do you think about this?

    Thanks and best regards

It is very likely correct, by which I mean that I believe there are more than a few 866 date models that were marked 866A. It is true that the designation is not precisely accurate, but it seems that IWC used that reference liberally.

Here's an example with an archive extract:

    Hello Tony C,
thanks, for your information, the exerpt from the archives really saved my day.
Since the watch is from 1971 which was the las year of production for the 866 it looks like the Factory used the cases forseen as 866 A for models with date tht should be marked 866 AD.

    thanks and best regards

    Congratulations to a wonderful watch.

And I can confirm that I've seen quite some "AD's" of various references where the D seems to be missing, I don't think there was a stringent routine to necessarily have the D marked. (However, I can not recall the opposite, a non-date with a D, that seems more important to me).

Wear it in good health, my "midnight blue sigma dial" says: Hello!
