    Good Morning,

This is my first posting and I hope I am positing in the right category. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Steven, I am British and I am 54 years old, I live in Germany about 20 minutes away from Schaffhausen. I love watches but I don’t really understand much about the technical specifications and or vocabulary.

I own an IWC Flieger Mark XV and I have a few questions – please excuse my description of the problem.

There is (my description) a steel “ring” (crown?) around the glass, it is scratched and I would like to have to replace. My questions are:

1)Is the “ring”part of the watch housing or is it a single component?
2)Is it possible to have it replaced or do I need to replace the complete housing?
3)Does anyone know what this might cost?
4)Can I go personally to IWC in Schaffhausen to have the watch repaired or do I need to send it in via an authorised IWC dealer?

    Thanks for any help!

    Steven

    Hi Steven,

Welcome here. The ring around the crystal is called a bezel. What you could do is send the watch in to IWC for a total overhaul: the watch is probably about 10 years old, and a check-up may be a good idea. It is then pampered in a way that it looks brand new after it: most people like it. It is not cheap and it takes maybe a few months. I guess this is the way to proceed, I am not sure bezels are exchanged, being part of the watch, unless damaged beyond repair, which hardly ever happens. After the spa treatment, being careful when wearing the watch will prevent most of new scratches to appear.

    Kind regards,
    Paul

    Hello Paul,

Many thanks for your response and suggestion. The watch was given to me in that condition, a real shame but none the less I am still extremely happy to have it. None of the watches I have purchase over the years are in the same condition. The scratches are not really that bad, I am just very picky and don’t like them if you know what I mean.

Thanks again, wishing you and your family all the best for 2014!

    Best regards,

    Steven
