    Hi all,

I have recently spot an IWC Mark XVI on the Internet which is going cheap (approx US750). (Too much for a replica) With inexperience judgement, I am unable to see if this watch is a real one or a replica.

I have check the DateYourIWC applet online and the summary given are as stated:

The movement is a LÈp. calibre 49, dating from the year 1888.
The case was most probably produced resp. delivered around 1888.

Would need advice from anybody for this watch. Specifications and pictures are as attached.

    Specifications as stated:
IWC Mark XVI Pilot Black Dial Automatic Date Steel Mens Watch 39mm
Beautiful and in rare condition (98% from 100%)
Running great and keeping excellent time
According to experts: One of the best movements ever made by the Swiss industry.

    Case: Stainless steel
Crystal: Sapphire crystal without any scratches.
    Crown: Original crown
Dial/Hands: Black Arabic dial with the original hands.
    Buckle: Original IWC Buckle
Band: New HIRSCH black lather band
Movement: 21 Jewel Automatic IWC caliber C.30110
    Serial number: 32450xx

The watch looks ok to me. But recently I saw on a weekly base new IWC watches for sale on a major auction site with prices too good to be true. Most of the time from new sellers with zero feedback. And you know what they say : if it is too good to be true...

Yeah, exactly, seller isn't replying as well.

The fraud also can be that in the end they send another watch than the one on the pictures.
    The pictures look OK.
The price alone is a sign that something is wrong. Otherwise it's a real bargain.
But in a way you have to trust the seller which is tough for a private seller.
The text is blabla, the 98 of 100% is useless.
The number 32450xx could probably be OK.
Where you got the 1888 from? Did you take 32450 as the number? The number means: 3.245.0XX where the XX is 2 more digits not given here.
Where you have the movement number from, if the seller is not replying?
The 30110 is the calibre number not the movement number. The calibre means the type of movement not the single instance of that movement.
    Good luck choosing!

I could roughly see the last second digit but with the last digit, it is defined as a 2007 Mark XVI model.

I would probably not buy that watch though the price is a real bargain.

    Thanks again!

Just to add to the comments... it may be just the quality/lighting of the photos, but this MARK XVI appears to have been over polished. Looking at pic #5 especially, the polished sharp fine beveled angles on the lugs have disappeared indicating heavy polishing. Again, this may be just the photographing that is sending up a "red flag". The simplicity of the MARK XVI dial/case design makes it an easy model to target for replication. I have seen some fake MARKS that were damn good...easy to pass off to a untrained eye. Without certification papers, box, etc. along with the fact serial numbers are easy to copy and not to mention the low-pricing for a watch that is suppose to be 98% condition...it doesn't add up IMO.
