    Good evening everyone,

I recently purchased two different IWC Fluor Elastomers straps for my Pilot Chronograph.

Around Christmas time, I read a couple of articles on media mentioning that Fluor elastomers have the capability to release PFAS plastics inside the human body and while the article was mainly focused on such Fluor elastomer straps for Apple Watches, I am concerned on the IWC ones that I bought at a very expensive price ( more than 300$). I sent a message to IWC yesterday and am still waiting for a reply..

I would like to know if anyone else who has such rubber straps heard the same and whether they are equally worried.

And here is the answer I got from IWC,

I have read the question and understand the concerns. The PFAS topic is also very hot inside IWC (and Richemont in general) and many discussions are currently ongoing. Let me point out the following:

    1. It is correct that our FKM (Fluorine Kautschuk Material) straps consist mainly of fluor elastomers and therefore the PFAS content is very high.

    2. Release tests have shown that the PFAS release rate is very low and below the allowed threshold limit.

    3. We are currently checking alternatives for future straps. Having said that it is not an easy task as the fluor elastomers offer some exceptional properties. But it is clear that we will replace the FKM straps in the future.

So nothing to worry, but even with the very low release rate, IWC is thinking of alternatives,

Thank you for the answer IWC

Thanks for getting a reply through your unofficial channel. The problem clearly exists and I would expect IWC to be responsible for the products they sell, including a refund for the bands they sold and that are not good for their customers’ health.
The problem is not irrelevant and even though it seems unusual to imagine that a watchmaker can affect their customers’ health, it is something that should be coming to everyone’s attention and handled correctly.

IWC should declare that officially on their website, don’t you think?

I think I will continue to use straps either made from stainless steel or deceased cattle.

That is starting to be my thought also but it is almost unbearable to look at my watch on my wrist and think that it could damage my health. And this after paying 600$ for two OEM IWC bands. In other industries, companies create recalls and this is not when health is involved.

Could I get the official email for such type of customer service questions? I would prefer the Swiss email since the US IWC organization leaves a lot to be desired and so far they did not dignify me with any reply.
