    Hi there,

I am glad to invite you to discover the photo gallery I published this morning about the IWC Portuguese Grande Complication (19 pics). Sorry but the article itself is only available in French for the time being...
The watch was loaned to us by IWC France for a special issue.
Warning: the strap is not the orgininal one!

The article and the photos are here: www.thewatchobserver.fr/-montres-de-luxe-et-de-prestige-guide-d-achat-essai-revue-comparatif-photos-prix-du-neuf-/-IWC-Portugaise-Grande-Complication-.html

    Hope you will appreciate!

Absoltutly a beautiful timepiece. However, influence by my buddy KS Low in Singapore, I have to state that this watchnlooks even more handsome, when in rose gold!

What I'm about to say is a personal observation and is not intended to offend anyone who have other brands of watches in their collection.

    Introduction:

This IWC Portuguese Grande Complication Ref. IW377013 in my opinion is very modern in its design and probably the direct competitor of course to the Patek-Philippe Grande Complication Ref. 5074P-001. When compared side by side, the Patek-Philippe looks dated and rather lacking in detail on the dial.
Keep in mind that both watches are measured in 42.2 mm excluding the crown.

    Let's Compare the Movement:

However, the Patek Philippe Ref. 5074P-011 uses the Caliber R 27 Q a micro-rotor automatic movement which features Perpetual calendar : day, date, month, leap year by hands Moon phases and am/pm indication. This movement measures in 28 mm in diameter with a height of 6.9 mm 12 bridge 39 Jewels that uses a Gyromax Balance with a rate of 21,600 vibrations per/hr (3 Hz) and contains 467 parts with a power reserve of 48 hours.

Now let's look at the inside of the IWC Ref. IW377013 for a moment:

The IWC Caliber 79091 is an in-house movement with 75 Jewels rated at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of 44 hours. This movement encompasses an amazing array of features that includes:
Hour, Minutes, Chronograph, Minute repeater, Perpetual calendar, Four-digit year display, Perpetual moon phase display, Crown-activated rapid calendar advance. In order to make the Caliber 79091 stand out from the competitor,is the fact that this movement contains no more than 659 parts!

    The Verdict:

Certainly with the economic state of the Euro-Zone Crisis, the Patek-Philippe Ref.5074P-011 has an astronomical price tag to match the brand. I guess if you are a Patek Philippe Aficionado, then again this watch is worth every penny.

However, those of us who enjoy mechanical innovations, captivating watch designs and a timepiece that is well engineered. The IWC in my view seems to be the logical choice with a down-to-earth price tag.

    Conclusion:

The IWC Ref. IW377013 is indeed a Grande Complication,in terms of technical prowess and a beautiful watch to enjoy for many decades.

    Simon

Coordinated with the other thread regarding "best value"...I dare say that this Platinum Grand Complication is truly a best value example, given everything you get in a single watch!

i am not a lover of RG, but I agree with Mark, the Grande Comp makes it a tough choice...
