I bought this one a few years ago, obviously secondhand, and just noticed it
is listed as new - 7.3k
    GBP.

They replaced the 7750 movement with something called 69380 which is partly
made in-house. Otherwise it looks identical.

I wonder how common this is?

The question was: how common is it to re-release a watch under the same P/N
    but with different internals?

It is listed as new by a number of sellers e.g.
    Mens-Watch-IW389101

and the layout of the 3 dials differs from the 7750 version.

Sorry - the forum software breaks the URL but a google on IW378901 shows the
above as one of the first adverts. Here is the same URL shortene

I believe your question was if the ref 389101 is the same watch as the older
    ref 3890.

The newer 3891 has the fully inhouse cal 69380 ( I don't know what part of it
would not be inhouse made ? )

The case is a little bigger 44.5mm vs 44mm.

Is it uncommon to see a watch company housing a new caliber is a similar model
? I don't think so, happens all the time with a lot of brands.

    Interesting mystery :)

and a a google for the same P/N shows this, selling new for GBP 7300

OK; I can't post the 2nd image whatever I do. Clearly there are bugs in the
software, or there is a limit on images per user. But it is what you find on
google for the P/N, new GBP 7300.

    will try again

The picture you show is indeed the ref 378901, from 2008 and 44mm big.

Then you had the ref 388001 46mm with cal 89365

And now in the current collection there is the 389101 with a 44.5mm case and
    cal 69380.

There are no other black Top Gun chronos new for sale from IWC.

Maybe with your google search you can find old stock sold as new.

You are indeed right. This is the advert I now see; it appears under the old
number but is a different number [can't post images anymore]
