I have inherited an old IWC vintage watch that I sent in for service. I have
been told it would cost approximately 2,000 USD for a full service and
restoration (was pretty poor condition initially with multiple scratches along
    the case and plexiglass).

Based on IWC's assessment it is a vintage watch Ref 1817 from the 1970s with
automatic movement. I have spent quite a bit time trying to research it
online but have been unable to find much information. I was wondering if
anyone had information regarding this particular model. I wasn't sure it the
2,000 USD would be worth it to fully service/repair the watch or if I would be
better of potentially looking for something new.

    Thanks!

Hello, welcome to the forum. Are you sure about the ref nr ? Could it be a ref
    817 ?

Please post a picture of the watch, that could help us.

The 1 prefix is by the by and simply an in house reshuffle....although two
different versions of case were used on the one model. The more classical case
is executed to a finer degree and the level of finish is high...for me it's
the nicest schaffhausen piece of the period over and above all the model named
usual suspects and holds a bunch of proportions that are delightful...

That said $2k sounds excessive by a margin

    Hi,

I had my IWC completely restored at Schaffhausen about ten years ago. It cost
me 1300 dollars but it was worth every penny. It came back as new. So I think
your price of 2000 is quite reasonable.

Please post some pictures when you get her back!

    Best regards,

    Henrik

Thanks to everyone for their responses as it has been quite helpful.

The reference number 1817 was given by IWC during on cost estimate but I have
attached 3 pictures of the watch.

    That is a beautiful watch!

And considering it is a family heirloom that you inherited, I would say it is
well worth restoring and keeping in the family.

I'm not sure if this is the case that Catherine is referring to, but the
proportions are very nice. And I just love those lugs! Definitely worth a
    complete service.

Yes it is Ben...36mm with 20mm lugs and about 10mm deep if the original
crystal remains...the soft graining finish to the lug tops along with a mirror
polished lapped edge along the case side is often missing or smudged over or
worst still theyve been restored with an incorrect non original finish.
    Beautiful watch
