It's a slow, very rainy Labor Day in Philadelphia. I wandered down to the basement to try a close-up technique I have not done before.

Shot with D700 Nikon, Nikkor 105 macro, f 11 @ 1/30 second using live view. The live view is the new element. You can actually see your shot more full frame in the back monitor vs peering through the viewfinder looking for focus.

Since I have been wearing my VC Portofino after its upgrades, it was on my wrist and the guinea pig for the shoot. What do you think?

    Cropped lightly:

For those of in the USA, have a great last day of the holiday weekend.

It is very good because I can see every speck of dust as well as all of the great detail in the movement. Is that a scratch or a hair just to the right of "JEWELS" and "POSITIONS" ?

But it is apparent that a good lens and the proper light make all the difference.

    Happy Labor Day.

    LOL.

It is a hair from my balding head. : ). I wiped and wiped with a cloth, but the static created picks up stuff you don't see in the viewer on with your naked eye.

Outstanding shots Bill! Great detail. Did you light the scene or use available light? The D700 is what I shoot as well though, unfortunately, my 105mm lens isn't macro.

I use a homemade light box as my basement is windowless. The 105 macro is a superb lens worth the cost, if you do much CU work. It can serve as a decent portrait lens as well.

Beautiful pictures Bill and indeed, taking watch pictures is a great way of spending a rainy day!

Let's hope we get some rain here too so I can take out the macro lens :-)

    Kind regards,

    Clemens

Bill, I'm speechless! ....for a nmber of reasons!

1)uncanny as it seems - I've been thinking of watch photos / macro shots all day today!
2)these photos are of unbelievable clarity, sharpness and macro focus!

You are aware, that your ever increasing level of competance when it comes to watch shots, has been driving me to levels of unknown frustrations. The better the photos you post - the harder I try and the worse my reults are with my happy snappy compact camera.

Absolutely brialliant pics Bill - thanks for sharing.

Great photos Bill, I have a similar set up, but in my garage. I use a Nikon D90 with a 45MM Macro lens and it takes great shots too, but I have found you have to be so careful to make sure all the dust, lint and finger prints are removed because it all shows up in your shots otherwise.

I also find that with my older vintage watches every little scratch shows up which are hardly noticable to the naked eye, so the watch looks worse in the photos then it does on my arm.

How are you with taking photos of the dials. I have just bought a new Regulateur with Ardoise dial, but when I take some photos the dial looks more blue than Ardoise, I think it must be the white balance, but I am shooting it with the WB on K (5,000) and using a light tent with 5,000K globes. Any suggestions?
