First, the game of go is about 4000 years old, originating from China. Then, the problem (black to play and live) is at least as old as IWC, coming out of the Hatsuyoron, a very famous collection of problems from the golden era of go in Japan. Then, my board, stones and bowls are more than 20 years old. Finally, my watches are from 2008 and 2009, but they pay tribute to a watch that is even older than I am.

The next few days are devoted to leisure for the most of us, why not giving the problem a shot?

    Kind regards,
    Paul

    Very cool thread Mark!

Here are two old things - my wrist and my AT 816 - both from 1969!
    [i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h341/Skule/IWC%20AT%20816%20and%20Deep%20Two/4ef8daee-77a8-4220-bc7c-1642b6462271_zps4fbabaae.jpg](s1105.photobucket.com/user/Skule/media/IWC%20AT%20816%20and%20Deep%20Two/4ef8daee-77a8-4220-bc7c-1642b6462271_zps4fbabaae.jpg.html)

Tilo and Jarrod - we'll have lots to talk about in Geneva. You know how old I am - 1969 means that not only did I see Maiden live on the Somewhere in Time Tour I also caught KISS live in 1984 and my first "real" cassette was KISS - Dynasty in 1980 :-)

Great idea Skule - similar vintage here, but my first cassette was the Ace Frehley solo album. You've inspired me for a quest - it'll be a long term project though.

@Tracy - stunning photos with well matched watches to artefacts.

I still have some junior pilot wings from Qantas... a long time ago now!

I missed this! My biggest regret in life is not seeing Maiden live during the Somewhere In Time tour.... Jealous!!

A few days ago I posted this picture, showing my two Vintage Collection Portuguese, aptly coloured black and white, fitting the famous problem from the Hatsuyoron.

    i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj79/BloemenPA/B0667467-675A-47BF-A40F-3E34DD05DF00-1803-000002722DB43247_zps72fd6554.jpg

Here is the sequel, showing my two Ingenieurs, with two end positions of the solution of the problem. First, my Vintage Collection Ingenieur, representing the elegant of the two. With it, the correct answer, both sides playing the best moves, black living small.

    i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj79/BloemenPA/imagejpg1_zpsf03ec517.jpg

Second, my titanium Ingenieur AMG, representing the tough of the two. With it, the greedy variation by white, trying to capture black, but being captured himself, by the revival of the seemingly dead single stone: black lives big.

    i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj79/BloemenPA/imagejpg2_zpse7060834.jpg

There is a lesson here: being tough and greedy sometimes doesn't get the optimal result, being subtle and in a way cooperative is to be prefered then.

Showing the sequences of moves is beyond the practical possibilities here, thus showing the niceties of some of the moves is omitted. But the pictures are pretty, and we are talking watches here, don't we?

    Kind regards,
    Paul
