Last week my wife and I visited Texas to meet up with our newly married daughter’s in-laws. Her hubby grew up in Texas, but the newly weds live in Alexandria, VA. The TX visit was a homecoming and a big celebration of their nuptials. While there, we stopped in Austin, TX to have a mini-GTG with Dzul and his bride. We had plenty of time to talk watches and eat great BBQ and Mexican fare.

As usual with our Forum group they were great hosts although they might have done a better job with the heat. Most days it was near 103 F (39.5 C). That’s too hot for this NE Yankee.

Jim lives in Taylor, TX not far from Austin. We took side trips to Austin and San Antonio. While in his hometown, Jim took us to probably the best BBQ place on the planet.

Muellers has been around in this location since 1949 and all the residue and grease from the smoke pits was fimly attached to the walls and windows. Since there was no AC, it was a hot place to be.

    Can you taste the goodness?

The side trip to San Antonio was excellent. I lived there in the 1970’s, but had not been back for decades. The Riverwalk is the place to hangout and get some shade and great Mexican cusine.

Here is the Devine Ms. D with my wife and me at the Alamo.

    And with Jim

We compared IWC’s while cooling down with a Texas size, giant iced tea along the Riverwalk.

The highlight of the day for me was a genuine Mexican meal.

As we left Austin to head to the new in-laws we did the required table shot and wrist shot of our CFP’s.

Thanks to Jim and Ms. D for a wonderful, yet sweaty, visit with good friends. Next time, I’ll visit in January.

Looks super, Bill. But you're lucky you only got the moderate heat.

Food, watches, and sites all look good. And of course, it's great to see Dorothy and Jim.

In 2011, I was invited to a WatchTime event in Philadelphia that included an IWC booth hosted by MF and a collectors dinner with Walt Odet. Bill and Mary hosted us in their home sight unseen. Dorothy had just finished her citizenship requirements and was on the cusp of her swearing-in ceremony. Bill took us to all the important historical sights in Philly that were highlighted in Dorothy's American history study. We were shown hospitality and kindness, and got to meet Alan R., Dick L. and our late friend Kevin.

It was a real joy to finally return that kindness. And really, what could be more fun than watch talk, tourista thrills and good eats with good folks! However, Bill missed an important aspect of the Tejas heat. Going outside and doing stuff was like using a treadmill in a sauna...great for sweating out those toxins...lol!
