About a month ago, I bought a brand new 3714 Portuguese chronograph from my local AD. A few days after receiving it, I noticed that there was some sort of smudge or blotch on the dial. I went to a local IWC boutique (not the AD I bought it from) and they took it for a few days and cleaned the dial, although it took some convincing. I got it back and was happy, but then very recently was admiring my new watch and noticed that there is something that looks like a fingerprint or smudge right at the tip of the minute hand. It is very hard to notice unless you know what to look for and are looking for it, but now that I have seen it, I know it's there and it is bugging me. Otherwise, the watch is perfect. My question is: how easy is this to resolve? Is it easy for my AD (or the IWC boutique, though I would prefer to go through my AD since I bought it from them so they're more likely to want to help) to pop open the watch and clean the minute hand? Or replace it if need be? Or are the odds just as high that, in getting this problem fixed, some other problem will be introduced (another smudge, dust, etc)? Should I just live with it and try to forget it? Thank you.

I would be tempted to leave it but the grease from the finger print may corrode the hand over time. It may be worth having a chat with the AD/Boutique.

I had a problem with the unfinished underside of a hand on an IWC watch in my collection. It bugged me for a while but I think I am getting over it.

Thanks for the reply. It's really difficult to tell what it is - fingerprint, dust or just an uneven paint job at the very tip of the minute hand. Am I asking for a bigger problem by having an otherwise flawless watch opened up again?

Well, the hands should be similar to those hands on the attached photo.

    But what is unfinished ?

I think, just the upper side is painted in black and the underside in NOT painted ?!

So, the production saves one step !!

Hebe, my friend, one less step in the production led to many sleepless nights for me.

    Really ?

Because it makes sense to keep the underside as it is:

    • less effort at production, the step :-)
    • saves weight, the missing paint
    • the watchmaker is sure what is up and down
    • saves hight

I am sure, there are many reasons more ::--))
