    This is not a joke.

If pocket watches like these being hung on a hook, they immediatly start to swing.

The balance energy is extracted and the watches start to run inaccurate.

In this case I have measured about 5 seconds per hour.

The deflection of the oscillation is about 2 mm at the lower end of the watches.

Not easy to show this by a photo, but it should be possible to notice it.

So, don´t use PW holders with hooks.

Any PW owner can do this test.

    Regards

    Ha! That's too cool :-)
It's only right that a watch becomes it's own pendulum....

    Great observation!

To add my own empirical data, it also works with my Doxa, which suggests that the phenomenon (as expected) may not be brand-specific. I postulate that given a sensitive enough suspension, wristwatches would behave in a similar manner. We should apply for a seven-figure EU research grant to further develop the idea.

That's when you really need a tourbillon.

Yes Mark, it works like a pendulum.

But the vibrations are modulated, because it is not a harmonic pendulum.

Would be interesting to discribe the function with a mathematic formular :-)

And this is the pendulum generator, also known as balance :-)

Sure, it does not depend of brands.

But it does depend of the weight of the watch and the weight and size of the ballance.

Hm, interesting idea, looking for a PW with a tourbillon.

Do you know such PWs ?

But would a tourbillon really solve the oscillation ?

I am not sure at the moment, but will think about it.

A three axes tourbillon would reduce it time by time ?!

Hebe, I have seen some pocket watches with tourbillons come up for sale. Girard Perregeaux produced one and also had a marine chronometer with a two minute tourbillon which would have hung nicely on a thick chain. When I get my Cal 972 back from service, I will try your experiment.
